Spring School on Near-Term Quantum Computing

March 17, 2026

The Pedro Pascual Benasque Science Center will host the second edition of the Spring School on Short-Term Quantum Computing from March 16 to 20. This event will build on the success of the first edition, held in 2024, which brought together more than 80 scientists from various countries.

Organizers:

A. Cervera-Lierta (Barcelona Supercomputing Center)
A. Pérez-Salinas (ETH Zurich)
A. Pozas-Kerstjens (University of Geneva)
J. Argüello-Luengo (Polytechnic University of Catalonia)

2026 marks the 10th anniversary of IBM granting public access via the cloud to its quantum computing devices. This milestone ushered in a new era in quantum computing research, allowing researchers worldwide to experiment with real quantum hardware and evaluate both its potential and its limitations.

Despite the significant advances made over the past decade, there remains a gap between the theoretical capabilities of future quantum computers and the performance of currently available devices. In this context, the school’s goal is to train the next generation of quantum computing researchers, providing them with an up-to-date overview of the field and the tools to make the most of today’s quantum devices, while exploring the challenges that must be overcome to achieve fully functional quantum computers.

This school has been made possible thanks to the support of various national and regional initiatives in quantum technologies, whose goal is to strengthen the quantum ecosystem in Spain and enhance its international presence. These include Quantum Spain, the Catalonia Quantum Academy, RITCE (Network for Quantum Information and Technologies in Spain), and BasQ.

The event will take place at the Pedro Pascual Benasque Science Center, where participants will have the opportunity to interact with one another and with the speakers. The welcoming setting of the Benasque Valley is an ideal environment for scientific collaboration and the exchange of ideas.
