BasQ–IBM Practitioners Workshop explores new capabilities for scaling quantum advantage

March 06, 2026

The Basque Quantum (BasQ) ecosystem recently hosted the BasQ–IBM Practitioners Workshop “New Capabilities for Scaling Advantage”, a technical session designed for advanced users within the BasQ quantum community.

The workshop brought together researchers and practitioners to explore some of the key technical challenges currently shaping the development of quantum computing.

The session focused on error mitigation, a crucial area for improving the performance of today’s quantum devices and moving closer to achieving practical quantum advantage. As current quantum hardware remains susceptible to noise and operational errors, developing effective mitigation techniques is essential for scaling quantum algorithms and maximizing the capabilities of existing processors.

The workshop featured a technical session delivered by experts from IBM Quantum, including Joana Fraxanet and Cristina Sanz Fernández. Their presentation provided participants with valuable insights into the latest tools and approaches available within IBM’s quantum ecosystem for implementing and optimizing error mitigation strategies.

Beyond the technical content, the event served as a valuable opportunity for members of the BasQ ecosystem to connect, exchange experiences, and discuss shared challenges in the field of quantum computing. Such interactions play an important role in strengthening collaboration and fostering knowledge exchange among researchers and practitioners working on quantum technologies in the Basque Country.

The workshop also involved the participation of several BasQ Advocates, including Raúl Ignacio Guerrero Avilés, Álvaro Nodar Villa, Ángel Rodríguez, Benjamin Tirado, Jesús Cobos, and Javier Oliva del Moral, who contributed to the final discussion and helped organize the event.

Through initiatives like this workshop, BasQ continues to strengthen the Basque quantum ecosystem, promoting talent development, scientific collaboration, and knowledge exchange while positioning the Basque Country as an active contributor to the global quantum computing landscape.
