BasQ at the Quantum Materials Hackathon at CERN
July 15, 2026Last weekend, the Open Quantum Institute (OQI) hosted the second edition of the Quantum Materials Hackathon at CERN, bringing together top students and researchers to explore how quantum computing can accelerate the design of next-generation materials.
Over the course of the event, participants worked in teams to apply quantum algorithms and simulation techniques to real-world materials science challenges, ranging from novel energy storage solutions to advanced semiconductor design.
BasQ is proud to have been represented by two of its Advocates, Unai Aseguinolaza Aguirreche and Benjamin Tirado, who took part as challenge creators and mentors. Drawing on their expertise in quantum computing and materials science, they designed an entire hackathon challenge from scratch, giving participating teams a real problem to tackle at the intersection of these two fields. Throughout the weekend, they also provided guidance and technical support to the competing teams, helping them navigate the complexities of applying quantum approaches to practical material design questions.
The initiative reflects BasQ's broader commitment to fostering talent and knowledge exchange within the quantum ecosystem, both locally and internationally. The event was a resounding success, with strong engagement from all teams involved. BasQ extends its congratulations to Unai and Benjamin for their contribution, and thanks the organizers and all participants for their involvement in this initiative.
