Basque Quantum Industry Workshop | Companies and technological centers in the Basque Country show interest in quantum computing.

March 04, 2024

- More than 100 professionals from 51 companies in the Basque Country attended the sessions organized by BasQ - Basque Quantum to learn about the opportunities offered by quantum technology.
- Scientific experts from BasQ and IBM shared the fundamentals of quantum computing, its potential, its differences from classical computing, as well as more technical concepts.

Basque Quantum Industry Workshop

On Monday and Tuesday, the Ensanche Building in Bilbao hosted the first sessions organized by BasQ - Basque Quantum, aimed at exploring the possibilities offered by quantum computing. The participation of over 100 professionals from 51 companies in the Basque Country demonstrated the interest of the Basque business community in quantum computing, which is expected to profoundly transform how companies - both in the private and public sectors - will operate and create value in the coming years. This initiative is part of the BasQ - Basque Quantum Strategy, led by the Basque Government and in collaboration with the Provincial Councils of Araba, Bizkaia, and Gipuzkoa, and is part of the actions included in the agreement signed between the Ikerbasque Foundation and IBM.

The first session was aimed at executive profiles within companies, as well as Technology and Innovation managers. Today's session had a more technical focus and centered on the presentation of IBM's computational development and programming tool for quantum computers (Qiskit).

BasQ Objectives / Alliance with IBM

One of BasQ's main objectives is to establish the Basque Country as a reference ecosystem in promoting an economy based on Quantum Technologies and as a platform for launching new companies and businesses.

A key element of BasQ is the launch of the IBM-Basque Quantum Computational Center, an agreement aimed at promoting quantum research, generating quantum talent, promoting economic development, and providing the necessary quantum computing infrastructure to achieve these objectives. The strategic alliance with IBM is based on the presence in the Basque Country of excellence capabilities to drive a commitment to excellence science. It also seeks to make the Basque Country a territory for quantum computing training and experimentation and industrial application through the development of use cases.

This IBM-Basque Quantum Computing Center will provide computational infrastructure to researchers from the Ikerbasque Foundation and its partners to help research personnel achieve these goals. Researchers will be able to run quantum programs to explore complex problems, including modeling new materials and how quantum computing can be used as part of broader sustainability efforts. IBM Qiskit Runtime services made available through this collaboration will leverage an IBM Quantum System One to be deployed in the Ikerbasque building located in San Sebastián. This new center represents a further step in promoting technological development in the Basque Country to expand the horizons of computing.
