Invitation to submit Expressions of Interest for the identification of potential research projects in Quantum Computing in collaboration with IBM

October 01, 2025

The BasQ-Basque Quantum initiative, in collaboration with IBM, is launching a new process to collect Expressions of Interest (EoIs) from the Basque research ecosystem. The goal is to identify and evaluate new and ongoing research projects across various domains related to quantum computing and explore potential future collaborations with IBM for the advancement of these projects.

This call for EoIs represents an exciting opportunity for researchers and institutions to engage in cutting-edge quantum research and potentially collaborate with IBM in developing projects. This process encompasses two distinct programs (and each expression of interest will be evaluated for possible participation in either program), both designed to support impactful quantum research:

  • Joint research projects with IBM: This program offers the opportunity to collaborate with IBM researchers in developing projects with direct support from the BasQ strategy in the form of funding to recruit new team members (either PhD candidates or postdoctoral researchers). Building on the model of previous EoIs, it enables selected teams to work together closely with IBM research scientists across a range of disciplines, facilitating technical collaboration and advancing shared research goals.

  • Road to Utility program: Focused on executing workloads on quantum hardware and enabling scalability, this program aims to amplify research impact. Through research collaboration, IBM experts will offer subject-matter support across critical areas of quantum computing, such as problem co-design, mapping, scalability, hardware execution, and performance optimization.

This call encompasses both programs. Each proposal will be evaluated individually and may be awarded participation in one of the programs, both, or none, depending on its suitability and alignment with each initiative.

We also encourage those who submitted EoIs in last year’s process to resubmit updated proposals, reflecting your latest research focus and progress. This will allow us to appropriately reevaluate your submission in the context of this year's programs. We look forward to learning more about your ideas and exploring opportunities to advance quantum research together.

Deadline for completing the EoI form: 10th October 2025 at 17:00h (CET)
